Touch a Truck 2015

Horns were honking and sirens ringing in the Ypsilanti Community High School parking lot on Saturday, as children ran around with excitement. The annual Touch a Truck event, hosted by Washtenaw Success By 6 Great Start Collaborative, had an amazing turnout. Despite some rain sprinkles in the morning, it turned out to be a beautiful spring day with a turnout of over 3,000 people!

Touch a Truck involves community agencies coming together and bringing every vehicle you can imagine- from an AAATA city bus to police cars to moving vans. Children race around the parking lot and line up to sit in the driver's seat of their favorite trucks. Seeing the fascination of little ones as they honk a (very loud) semi-truck horn or press the button to lower the back of a dump truck was so special. Many of the young ones were especially excited to get on a school bus, as they have not yet had the opportunity to do so as their older siblings might on a daily basis!

Coverage Counts joined several other agencies, not with a truck, but supplying parents with great information, and maybe some shade under our tents! We spent the morning reminding parents the importance of keeping their kids covered, to keep track of yearly renewals, and reporting life changes.

Special thanks to Success By 6 Great Start Collaborative for another successful year and The Rotary Club of Ann Arbor for sponsoring!
